Biomethane

Biomethane

At REGA ENERGY we develop, build, own and operate biomethane plants, supplying industrial companies and intensive energy consumers with locally produced renewable gases, replacing imported fossil fuels (natural gas and petcoke).

Our “energy from organic matter” approach transforms farming, municipal and industrial waste into Biogas, which will then be transformed into biomethane and injected into the grid to indirectly supply industrial consumers.

Why?

Being a perfect substitute for fossil gas, it can be distributed and transported on existing gas grids and used with no need for extra investment in processes. As a renewable gas that uses primarily vegetable and/or animal biomass, biomethane allows the offtakers (industrial partners) to decarbonise.

Who is this for?

While biomethane can be used by any industry that uses fossil gas, REGA ENERGY’s biomethane is specifically targeting the hard-to-abate sectors. Biomethane allows for faster decarbonisation of industrial processes and the renaissance of Portuguese and European industries.

BioCircular Economy

Our ‘Energy from Organic Matter’ approach converts agricultural, municipal and industrial waste into biomethane and helps restore soil health by mitigating environmental impacts on air, soil and water associated with the use of untreated manure.

How do we do it?

Benefits

Unlock your decarbonisation potential

By maximizing electrification and utilising all available biomethane, we can unlock significant decarbonisation potential for hard-to-abate industries, while offering end-consumers the benefits of cleaner energy sources.

Maximize electrification
Cleaner energy solutions
Price predictability

Not a change, a transition

One of the competitive advantages of biomethane is the fact that no additional structural installations are needed, as it is a plug-in solution.

FAQs

Where does biomethane come from?

Biomethane is produced from organic waste, whether that be domestic, industrial or from agricultural activities. Biomethane is a 100% renewable gas that stems from purifying biogas generated by the digestion of organic animal or vegetable matter.

Is biomethane already produced and used in Portugal?

Biomethane is not yet produced on an industrial scale in Portugal. However, there is available biogas that can and should be upgraded to biomethane. There is also a significant feedstock potential to be converted into biomethane, especially from agriculture.

Will biomethane help in the reduction of emissions produced by my industrial process?

Yes it will. The biomethane projects value chain are carbon-neutral or carbon negative, which means that by shifting from fossil gas to biomethane, the industrial processes will benefit from a proportional reduction in their CO2 emissions.
