Message from the CEO: Driving the Transition to a Sustainable Industry in Portugal

As 2024 concludes, we reflect on a year of progress and set our sights on the next steps to accelerate the advent of a modern and sustainable industry in Portugal.

Our vision is for “Made in Portugal” to stand as a global symbol of quality and sustainability.

We are confident that the Portuguese industry’s undisputed advantages – abundant renewables and international talent – will produce some of the world’s most competitive sustainable products.

“Made in Portugal” will soon be synonymous with “Made Sustainable.”

In order to decarbonise hard-to-abate industries, where full electrification is not an option, biomethane and green hydrogen will enable the production of some of the world’s most sustainable products, unlocking new, future-proof markets. This year:

  • We reached a significant milestone by signing the first long-term agreement for the supply of renewable gases with CRISAL (LCGlass Group). This partnership will contribute to CRISAL’s goal of becoming one of the most sustainable tableware glass producers in Europe.
  • Additionally, we were honoured to co-host the seminar “Shifting Towards Green Glass Manufacturing” in Porto, in partnership with the GlassTrend consortium. The event welcomed over 70 professionals from around the world to discuss the future of sustainable glass production.

At REGA Energy, we remain committed to supporting the modernisation of industry and contributing to energy and industrial policy development in Portugal, Iberia and across Europe. We proudly support the “Cleantech for Iberia” and “Cleantech for Europe” initiatives, working hard to generate traction from the Portuguese industry to help build a strong Cleantech industry.

In 2024, we engaged with stakeholders across the biomethane value chain in public discussions on the critical need to advance the biomethane industry in Portugal. We aggregated a large part of the Portuguese agricultural sector, through several projects, to join this modernisation movement and close the circular economy loop.

We are industrial realists.

In a cyclical geopolitical environment and amid increasing regulatory uncertainty in Europe, we need to cut through the noise and resolutely aim to provide greater certainty to the Portuguese industry.

We are resolute optimists.

Sustainability is a license to operate, and some of the world’s most competitive sustainable products will be Portuguese. Let’s build – now – the infrastructure to enable this business and societal opportunity and yield its positive externalities.

Looking ahead to 2025.

Our ambition is to take very significant steps towards launching our first two projects:

  • Biomethane production in Sousel.
  • Green hydrogen and oxygen production in Marinha Grande.

These initiatives represent tangible progress towards decarbonising Portugal’s energy-intensive sectors and enabling the production of some of the world’s most sustainable products.

 “Made in Portugal, made sustainable.”
