REGA ENERGY presents biomethane plant project near Sousel
On February 21, near Sousel, in the Alentejo region of Portugal, REGA ENERGY held a meeting with livestock producers, where it unveiled its project to build a biomethane production facility at that location. The plant would use manure and effluents from livestock farms, mainly located in the Northern Alentejo region.
The REGA ENERGY facility represents an investment of over 40 million euros and is expected to create around two dozen direct jobs and approximately 50 indirect jobs. It is expected to be operational in 2028, when it will begin injecting the renewable gas biomethane into Portugal’s existing natural gas grid.
REGA ENERGY’s plant will have the capacity to process 250,000 tons/year of livestock effluents and will contribute to the decarbonization of the gas grid through a circular economy approach. This process will also include returning digestate-based fertilizer to producers, alongside the production of biomethane.
At the event, in a recorded message, REGA ENERGY CEO Thomas Carrier reaffirmed the company’s commitment to accelerating decarbonization and supporting a sustainable economy and industry: “Our mission is to support the country’s energy transition. With this project, we also aim to improve the lives and businesses of Alentejo’s livestock producers,” said the CEO.
Nuno Pinto, REGA ENERGY’s Head of Biomethane, and Tiago Faria, Deputy Head for the same area, presented the project, which is currently undergoing the licensing process. Manuel Valério, the mayor of Sousel, delivered the opening remarks, and José Serralheiro, CEO of Pasto Alentejano—a prominent Portuguese company specializing in livestock production and a key partner of REGA ENERGY—endorsed the project in his intervention. The event brought together more than a dozen major livestock producers, along with representatives from local and regional authorities and institutions.
